ABOUT Plano

Plano Association Management

Named after the Spanish word for “flat”, which the locals understood to mean “plain”, the city of Plano dates back to the early 1840’s, a few years before Texas was annexed by the United States. Today, Plano boasts a population of more than 275,000 people, and was ranked as the “happiest city in America” in 2019 by the personal finance website WalletHub!

Like many of the Dallas suburbs, Plano began as a sparsely populated farming community, which it remained until the 1970’s when land appraisals and tax increases lead to a huge population boom. Fueled by the influx of large corporations, Plano’s population increased from about 17,000 residents up to more than 72,000 by 1980. More than 22 Fortune 500 companies now have their headquarters in Collin County, with many of those located in the city of Plano.

Despite its rapid growth in the late 20th century, Plano still found ways to preserve its past and embrace the natural beauty of the North Texas area. If you enjoy the outdoors, take some time to check out the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve or the Oak Point & Nature Preserve, both highlighted by very nice hiking and biking trails. Or if you’re more interested in learning about the city’s history, visit the Interurban Railway Museum, which features lots of activities for kids and adults. Looking for a family experience? Explore your creativity at the Crayola Experience Plano, which features 25 hands-on attractions for the whole family.
